KDP trim sizes for trivia books

Trim size is the first decision you make for a print trivia book, and it affects everything after it: how many questions fit on a page, your page count, your print cost, and how the book feels in a reader's hands. This guide covers the trim sizes that work best for trivia, and the KDP margin, page count, bleed and spine rules you need to meet so your file isn't rejected at upload.

The short answer

  • 6" × 9" — the default for most trivia books. It's KDP's most common paperback size, costs less to print than larger formats, and suits question-and-answer layouts for adults and families.
  • 8.5" × 11" — best for large print, kids' books, and activity-style trivia with lots of white space. It counts as a large trim size, so it prints at a different cost, and it has a lower maximum page count.
  • 5.5" × 8.5" or 5" × 8" — a compact, giftable format for stocking-stuffer and travel trivia books. Fewer questions per page, so plan for a higher page count.

KDP treats any book wider than 6.12" or taller than 9" as a large trim size, which is priced differently. Check KDP's printing cost calculator before you lock in a size.

Minimum margins by page count

KDP sets a minimum inside (gutter) margin that grows with your page count, because thicker books need more room at the binding. Top, bottom and outside margins have a fixed minimum.

Page countInside (gutter) marginOutside margins, no bleedOutside margins, with bleed
24–1500.375"0.25"0.375"
151–3000.5"0.25"0.375"
301–5000.625"0.25"0.375"
501–7000.75"0.25"0.375"
701–8280.875"0.25"0.375"

These are minimums, not targets. Trivia readers often write answers in the book, so slightly wider margins make pages more comfortable to use. Set margins from your final page count — if you add a round and cross into the next band, your gutter needs to grow too.

Do trivia books need bleed?

Usually not. Bleed is only needed when something prints all the way to the edge of the page — a background color, a full-page photo, or a border that runs off the edge. Most trivia interiors have white pages with content inside the margins, so a no-bleed file at your exact trim size is correct.

If you do need bleed, KDP trims 0.125" from the top, bottom and outside edge. Add 0.125" to your page width and 0.25" to your page height — for a 6" × 9" book, that's a 6.125" × 9.25" page. If even one page bleeds, the whole file must be set up with bleed. Note that every KDP cover requires bleed, whatever you choose for the interior.

Page count rules

  • A KDP paperback needs at least 24 pages. Hardcovers need at least 75.
  • KDP counts every page in your file — title page, contents, answer key, blank pages — and rounds odd totals up to an even number.
  • Maximums depend on trim size and paper: up to 828 pages for 6" × 9" on white paper, but only 590 for 8.5" × 11".

For trivia, page count is mostly a function of questions per page. Large type, multiple-choice layouts and answer explanations all use more space. Build one category, preview it, and multiply out before you commit to a trim size.

Spine text

KDP only allows text on the spine of books with at least 79 pages (80 if you use KDP's own Cover Creator). Below that, leave the spine blank. Spine width is calculated from your final page count and paper type, so design the spine last, once the interior is finished.

Print-ready checklist for trivia books

  • Trim size chosen and matched to your PDF page size
  • Gutter margin set from your final page count
  • No bleed unless something actually touches the page edge
  • Fonts embedded in the PDF
  • Clickable links turned off for the paperback edition
  • Answer key page numbers and cross-references checked
  • Cover template generated from the final page count and paper type
  • Proof copy ordered and checked before publishing

How Trivia Book Generator handles this

Pick a KDP trim size in Book Settings and the preview, PDF and Word exports all follow it. Set body text from 12 to 18 pt for large print, turn off clickable links for print editions, and preview every page before you export. Pro users can build a matching front or full-wrap cover with KDP dimensions and bleed.

FAQ

What is the best trim size for a trivia book?

6" × 9" works for most adult and family trivia books. Choose 8.5" × 11" for large print, kids' books or activity-style layouts, and 5.5" × 8.5" for compact gift books.

Is 8.5 × 11 a good size for large print trivia?

Yes. The extra page area lets you use 16–18 pt type without the book becoming very thick. It's a large trim size on KDP, so check the print cost, and note its 590-page maximum on white paper.

What margins does KDP require?

At least 0.25" on the top, bottom and outside edges (0.375" with bleed), plus an inside margin that starts at 0.375" for books up to 150 pages and increases with page count.

How many pages does a trivia book need for spine text?

At least 79 pages on KDP, or 80 if you use KDP's Cover Creator.

Can I change the trim size after publishing?

Not on the same listing. On KDP, trim size is locked once a paperback is published, so changing it means publishing a new edition. Decide before you upload.
